My opinion.
The 'real' reason some straight people can't get a grip on this...
And I'm straight (for our audience of millions):
They don't have the capacity to explain to their children what sex is all about. Straight sex. Not to mention gay sex. This terrifies them.
"How do I explain to my son that Jane and Sue are her parents?"
"How do I explain to my daughter that John and Fred are her parents."

I've had this conversation with many people. There's been 2 groups - homophobe idiots (which is just immaturity), and parents that are afraid to teach their children about the realities of the world. The latter is frightening as these people aren't really idiots.
They're afraid.
